Austria's Workers' Protection Act (ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz, ASchG § 26), with the Workplaces Ordinance (AStV § 40), requires employers to appoint and train enough designated first-aiders scaled to headcount — at least 1 per 20 employees in offices and 1 per 10 in other workplaces. First-aiders must complete a basic course of at least 16 teaching units, with a refresher of 8 hours within 4 years or 4 hours within 2 years.

Austrian childcare staff must provide evidence of a 16-hour first-aid course for paediatric emergencies (no more than one year old at end of training), plus a documented refresher of at least 8 hours every 5 years. Childcare is regulated at the state (Land) level — e.g. Vienna's Tagesbetreuungsverordnung — with online courses accepted.

Under Section 95 of the Austrian Criminal Code (StGB, "Unterlassung der Hilfeleistung"), anyone present at an accident or public emergency has a legal duty to render the obviously necessary assistance, unless it would endanger their own life or limb. Austrian criminal law contains no separate civil-immunity shield for volunteer rescuers.

In Austria, § 63 of the Health and Nursing Care Act (GuKG) requires registered (gehobener Dienst) nurses to complete at least 60 hours of continuing education per five-year period, with basic resuscitation among the competencies to be kept current. Self-selected CPR/AED, ACLS and PALS courses count toward this hour total.

In Austrian care homes and seniors' residences, the state-regulated one-year Pflegeassistenz (nursing-assistant) training under the GuKG requires the ability to give first aid and life-saving emergency measures — chest compressions, ventilation and defibrillator use. A recognized, up-to-date first-aid or resuscitation certificate meets this requirement and must be refreshed regularly.

Taking in a foster child under 14 in Austria requires a foster-care authorisation from the local child and youth welfare agency and a mandatory preparatory training course nationwide. There is no uniform statutory first-aid requirement, but several federal provinces — such as Lower Austria for crisis foster care — require proof of a completed first-aid course.

Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Austria for personal, childcare-licensing and employer purposes, providing 2-year certification. From 5 employees per workplace, designated first-aiders must complete at least 16 teaching units — the practical component is in person while theory may be delivered online.
