In health care, maintaining high standards of care to protect patients is essential. For registered nurses, continuing education to keep skills — including resuscitation — current is required by law; for nursing assistants, emergency competence is part of the regulated training. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

In Austria, nursing professionals are entered in the Health Professions Register (Gesundheitsberuferegister, GBR). The Health and Nursing Care Act (GuKG) requires ongoing continuing education to keep knowledge — including life-saving emergency measures — current.

§ 63 GuKG establishes this statutory continuing-education duty; the Austrian nursing association (ÖGKV) awards continuing-education points under its PFP® quality label. Basic resuscitation measures are among the competencies to be kept current.

§ 63 GuKG requires registered (gehobener Dienst) nurses to complete at least 60 hours of continuing education per five-year period; formal verification is not yet in force. Self-selected resuscitation courses count toward this hour total.

For nursing assistants, the one-year GuKG-regulated Pflegeassistenz training is decisive; it requires the ability to give first aid and take life-saving emergency measures — chest compressions, ventilation and defibrillator use. In addition to the occupational training, a recognized, up-to-date first-aid and resuscitation certificate evidences this competence and must be renewed regularly.
